Commissions for producing original artwork
for MyCiTi Bus Stations in the City of Cape Town’s
Integrated Rapid Transit System
First round submission deadline:
13:00H 19 October 2010
Background: The first IRT stations were completed in time for the FIFA World Cup with bus stations at the Airport, Civic Centre and Stadium. Three large artworks were successfully commissioned for each of these main stations. The smaller stations are currently being completed for the rollout of services to the West Coast along the Atlantis Corridor. There is now the opportunity to integrate artwork into the entrance areas of these smaller bus stations.
Concept: The commissions provide an opportunity for the City of Cape Town to partner with design schools in the city to showcase the talents of local artists and designers in the promotion of the MyCiTi bus service. The artworks should help give an identity to the bus station along the route, taking inspiration from their unique locations, historical and geographic contexts. The artworks will have a limited lifespan of four to five years where after they may be replaced with new works.
Participants: All designers and artists are invited to present proposals. Invitations will be extended to design schools to encourage their students to participate. These schools include, but are not limited to:
• Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Design
• University of Cape Town, Michaelis School of Fine Arts
• University of Stellenbosch
• AAA School of Advertising - Cape Town
• City Varsity, Film, TV & Multimedia School
• College of Cape Town
• Ruth Prowse School of Art
• Stellenbosch Academy of Design & Photography
• Vega, The Brand Communications School - CT
Locations: The following IRT stations are being considered for the current commissions:
1. Woodstock (on new bus-way, just west of Church St)
2. Paarden Eiland (on new bus-way,north of intersection with Paarden Eiland Rd)
3. Neptune (on new bus-way, just south of intersection with Neptune Street)
4. Section (on new bus-way, just north of intersection with Section St)
5. Vrystaat(on new bus-way, north of intersection with Vrystaat Road) NAME TO BE CONFIRMED
6. Zoarvlei (on new bus-way, near Milner Street intersection with R27)
7. Lagoon Beach (on R27, about 70 metres south of Boundary Rd)
8. Woodbridge (on R27, about 70 metres south of Loxton Rd)
9. Milnerton (on R27, about 40 metres north of Broad Rd)
10. Racecourse (on R27, just north of Racecourse Rd)
11. Sunset Beach (on R27, just north of Ocean Way)
12. Bayside (on Blaauwberg Rd, between intersections with R27 and Raats/Pentz Drives) NAME TO BE CONFIRMED
13. Granger Bay (on Granger Bay Blvd, near access to Fort Wynyard)
Area for artwork: The entrance area to the stations alongside the ticket booth has been allocated for artwork. The area is 6 650mm in length and 2 150mm in height, consisting of 7 vertical glass panels. The design of the artwork should consider both the viewer’s experience when encountering the work close-up on entering the station as well as views of the artwork from a distance, as seen by passengers in passing traffic and pedestrians from across the street. It is optional for the artwork to include the station name and red stripe currently across this area of the station.
Design: While artists are encouraged to give free range to their imaginations, preference will be given to designs that show an appreciation of the unique history of the station areas; the particular indigenous natural environment; and Cape Town’s local aesthetics. Inspiration may be gained from simple anecdotes or epic historical events. Consideration must be given to how the station name band and accompanying red line should be terminated or threaded through the artwork in some way to avoid the band being abruptly truncated.
Materials: The final artwork is to be produced on adhesive vinyl applied to the outside of the glass of the bus station. A substantial degree of transparency is to be maintained in the artwork. Other materials may be considered so long as they can guarantee a minimum four-year life span and are inclusive in the budget available.
Budget: The amount of R10 000.00 is allocated for each station. This amount is inclusive of design, production and installation of the artwork.
Terms and conditions:
• The artwork will be commissioned by The City of Cape Town
• Artist/designer will be appointed by Group Five Building
• The process will be managed by Educentric and ARG Design Architects
• A curatorial team comprised of representatives from the City of Cape Town, ARG Design Architects, Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Educentric will select the winning designs for commission.
• The selected artists will be given an opportunity to develop their proposals to produce the final artwork for approval by the curatorial team.
• The Artist/designer will be responsible for the printing and installation of the artwork
• The use of materials and print quality will be specified in the artist/designers contract

Only copies must be submitted, as materials will not be returned to the candidates. Artists are requested to submit a brief CV and encouraged to include references to, or examples of, other design work they feel reflect their ability.
Deadline: All initial submissions must be received by: 13:00H, 19 October 2010. Designers whose work is selected from this initial stage will be given the opportunity to refine their final artwork after review by the curatorial board.
Implementation: All artworks must be installed before the end of 2010. Most stations will be installed during the month of November with the remainder completed during the first two weeks of December 2010.
